In a significant milestone, ten young individuals hailing from the University of Guyana, Guyana School of Agriculture, and Linden Technical Institute have successfully completed the annual Agriculture Internship program facilitated by the Linden Fund Guyana Inc. (LFU).
The initiative, known as the “Grow UP Internship through Sustainable Agricultural Practices,” took place in Region 10.
This comprehensive program, now in its second year, was meticulously crafted after consultations with regional agricultural leaders and farmers.
Kadifa Greene Marshall, Director of Economic Development for LFU Inc., highlighted the program’s components.
The project’s primary focus is to fortify sustainable agricultural productivity in Region 10 through the implementation of climate-smart agricultural techniques.
National Coordinator of the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Program, Marissa Charles, expressed pride in their collaboration with the internship program.
Students were provided hands-on experience in areas such as cash crops, permanent crops, seedling production, and livestock farming, working closely with five established farmers in Linden.
Keefia Younge from the Guyana School of Agriculture, who received the Excellence Award, described her enriching experience positively.
Regional Agriculture Officer, Deryck Collins, commended the initiative, acknowledging its potential to narrow the gap between learners and farmers.
He emphasized how this bridge will lead to advancements in combating climate change and advancing the region towards food security.
The LFU Grow-UP Internship stands as a testament to the commitment towards fostering sustainable agricultural practices and equipping the youth with invaluable skills in the agricultural sector.
