The Andrew Six Head Lewis National Novices Championships kicked off on Friday evening at the National Gymnasium, witnessing strong performances from the Guyana Defense Force (GDF) in their opening bouts.
The action commenced with a semifinal clash in the 57-60 kg lightweight class, pitting Anthony Sanders of the GDF against Lennox Harvey of the Guyana Police Force. Sanders secured a points victory after the scheduled three rounds.
In the light middleweight 66-71 kg category, GDF’s Christopher Henry achieved a technical knockout against Shawn Rodney of Police Gym in round 2, prompting the referee to stop the fight.
The middleweight 71-75 kg semifinal saw Alex Butcher facing off against GDF gym mate Jamal Booker, with Butcher clinching a points decision victory.
In the quarterfinal of the light heavyweight category (75-80 kg), Malchi Clarke emerged victorious against Joseph George in an all-GDF bout.
Sherwin Gravesande of GDF secured a win in his semifinal clash against Republican Boxing Gym’s Kevin Neil.
Soldier Zidhan Wray also triumphed over Leandra Abrams of Police Gym in their super heavyweight (92+ kg) match-up. Guyana Defense Force’s Rayan Harry finished strong, outboxing Oswald Yaw in their super heavyweight clash, contributing to a dominant night for the GDF gym led by former boxer and three-star coach Terrence Poole.
The action will continue this evening, with the finals scheduled for Sunday in the squared circle inside the National Gymnasium.
