PISLM, an inter-governmental organization, is dedicated to assisting Caribbean nations in effectively managing their land resources.
The organization’s mission encompasses conducting comprehensive soil surveys, rehabilitating degraded land, and imparting crucial knowledge to the public, with a special focus on farmers, regarding best agricultural practices to maintain healthy soil.
The forthcoming soil testing endeavor is a pivotal step towards identifying areas with compromised soil quality that require rehabilitation.
Lakeram Persaud, the Chief Technical Officer of PISLM, revealed that the authorities have specifically requested the commencement of this exercise in regions 1, 5, and 10.
Simultaneously, Steve Maximay, a Marketing Expert specializing in Climate-Smart Agriculture, highlighted that agricultural extension officers are undergoing specialized training to enhance their proficiency in climate-smart agricultural operations.
Once equipped with this knowledge, these officers will play a pivotal role in transferring this valuable information to farmers in their respective regions.
The PISLM initiative is actively engaged in seven member states within the Caribbean Community, including nations like Barbados, St. Lucia, and Grenada. The soil survey in Guyana serves as a testament to the organization’s unwavering commitment to sustainable land management, ultimately contributing to the broader goal of climate-smart agriculture across the region.
