Guyana’s dedication to democracy and its remarkable journey of transformation have earned it high praise from Luis Almagro, the Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS), as announced during a special meeting of the OAS Permanent Council on Friday.
The OAS Permanent Council convened to honor Guyana’s transformative path, and Secretary General Luis Almagro, drawing from his engagements with various segments of Guyanese society, including civil society, expressed confidence in Guyana’s establishment of a significant route for economic and social progress. He extended congratulations to President Irfaan Ali and his administration, noting Guyana’s emergence as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
President Ali, in his address to the council, extended gratitude to the OAS for its steadfast support for democracy in Guyana. His remarks coincided with the observance of the International Day of Democracy.
The President emphasized that the role of the OAS, along with entities like the Commonwealth and Caricom, extended beyond observer missions, as demonstrated during the 2020 general and regional elections. He stated, “To all nations in this council, trust in its process.”
President Irfaan Ali is presently on a three-day visit to Washington, DC, where he engaged in discussions with various members of the US government. His delegation includes Foreign Minister Hugh Todd, Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud, and Army Chief Brigadier Omar Khan, among others.
