Farmers in remote hinterland and far-flung communities are set to receive a significant boost in their agricultural endeavors, thanks to a generous donation from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The consignment includes 500 durable plastic crates for fruits and vegetables, 300 efficient knapsack sprayers, and 20 tillers with accompanying spare parts. These invaluable resources were sourced by the FAO in collaboration with the World Food Programme’s Joint Development Emergency Programme for Food Security and Livelihoods Resilience in Guyana.
Dr. Gillian Smith, the Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization, highlighted that this sustainable development initiative aims to intensify support for farmers across Guyana, ultimately leading to a notable increase in food production.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha expressed profound gratitude for this essential equipment. He underscored that these farming implements will be distributed across various Amerindian communities, bolstering their agricultural capabilities. This initiative is poised to narrow the divide between the coastal and hinterland regions, ensuring that all communities have equal access to resources that can enhance their livelihoods.
The formal handover took place at the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) in Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
