Partner Farmers Receive Vital Agricultural Inputs via Grow Up SED Program

In a significant move to fortify local agriculture, partner farmers affiliated with the Grow Up program’s “Sustainable Agricultural Practice” (SED) recently obtained crucial agricultural supplies courtesy of Linden Fund USA/Guyana Inc.

This effort, geared towards strengthening farming operations, included the provision of imperative tools such as wheelbarrows, water cans, cutlasses, and shovels.

These supplies were distributed among the farmers who had undertaken mentoring roles during the SED program’s internship phase.

Khadifa Green, the Project Coordinator, pointed out that the allocation was strategically aimed at enhancing farming operations while simultaneously alleviating some of the financial pressures faced by the farmers.

Local farmers, who were the beneficiaries of this timely support, expressed their gratitude and recognized the substantial impact this assistance would have on their agricultural pursuits. Abiola Lewis, a farmer, emphasized how this support would greatly benefit the farming community and amplify their collective efforts.

The Grow Up internship SED program, initiated in 2021, aims to instill a passion for agriculture among young individuals by actively supporting endeavors to enhance food security. The five-week internship, which started in July, saw ten students partnering with five local farmers to gain hands-on knowledge about farming techniques and practices.

Keefia Younge, one of the interns, attested to the program’s effectiveness in providing invaluable, hands-on experience and knowledge in farming, particularly in livestock management.

Furthermore, the program is set to equip farmers with drip irrigation systems and shade houses, further enhancing their agricultural enterprises. The Grow Up agriculture program is generously funded through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and is implemented by the United Nations Development Program.

This endeavor stands as a commendable stride towards reinforcing agricultural sustainability and empowering local farmers in their pivotal role in ensuring food security.
