The demand for locally grown Cut Roses has witnessed a notable surge in the market. To meet this growing demand, the Ministry of Agriculture is taking proactive steps to expand the project, especially in preparation for the upcoming Christmas season.
In the first half of this year alone, more than 12,000 roses were harvested, averaging about 500 roses per week. This commendable output translated to earnings exceeding 4 million Guyanese dollars. These financial gains have significantly enhanced the livelihoods of single parents involved in the project.
Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, the Minister of Agriculture, emphasized the importance of this initiative for the nation. He stated that the ministry is now planning to invest in an additional shade house and introduce tissue culture techniques to further support the expansion.
This strategic move is anticipated to reduce rose imports by approximately 30 percent by the close of this year. The efforts to bolster local Cut Rose production not only strengthen the agricultural sector but also contribute to economic resilience and self-sustainability.
