In a significant move towards uplifting agriculture in Hinterland regions, ten Amerindian communities have received the requested agriculture inputs following the recently concluded National Toshaos’ Conference.
Communities such as White Water, One Mile, Three Brothers, Agates, Chenapau, and Karasabai in Region Nine are among the beneficiaries of this initiative. The distributed items encompass water pumps, spray cans, brush cutters, garden hoses, shade nets, plastic, and knapsack sprayers.
Maureen Da Silva, Vice Chairman of Agatash in Region 7, expressed gratitude for the equipment, highlighting its potential to expand agricultural efforts within her community.
Additionally, recognizing the critical role of Hinterland Agriculture, a separate unit is being established within the Agriculture Ministry to better prioritize and address the unique needs of these regions.
Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, disclosed that an estimated $3.2 billion will be allocated for agricultural development in Amerindian communities. The Guyana Marketing Corporation will work closely with farmers to secure ready markets for their produce, further strengthening the agricultural sector in these areas.
This commitment and investment underscore the government’s dedication to fostering agricultural growth and prosperity in Hinterland regions.
