In a concerted effort to bolster food production, the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) has distributed black giant and broiler baby chicks to 120 farmers in Region Six. This initiative is part of the Agriculture Ministry’s broader strategy to support local farmers.
Over 2,500 chickens were disbursed among sugar workers and residents in Tarlogie on the Corentyne and its adjacent communities. Coordinated by the GLDA, each beneficiary received 20 chicks, choosing between the black giant or broiler breeds.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha expressed the ministry’s steadfast commitment to collaborating with farmers and stakeholders to ensure food security. He highlighted the significant strides already made towards this goal, citing successful trials of wheat and biofortified rice.
Minister Mustapha further emphasized the government’s dedication to providing improved breeding animals for various livestock industries, including swine, cattle, and small ruminants.
The black giant breed, known for its substantial size and versatility, can yield up to 200 eggs and approximately 4.5 kilograms of meat annually. Notably, nearly 52,000 chickens have been distributed across hinterland regions and other parts of the country to date.
This endeavor stands as a testament to Guyana’s commitment to fortifying its agricultural sector and ensuring a sustainable food supply.
