Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo Criticizes Opposition for Failing to Fulfill Mandate

Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C), has expressed concern over the Opposition’s lack of responsiveness to government invitations and responsibilities.

He accused the Opposition of not fulfilling their mandate to the people, citing their handling of the Petroleum Activities Bill and the Natural Resources Fund Public Accountability and Oversight Committee.

Regarding the Petroleum Activities Bill, Dr. Jagdeo noted the Opposition’s reluctance to provide feedback in a timely manner.

The government had extended an invitation to the Opposition to submit their comments on the bill, but instead, the Opposition stated that they would present their remarks during parliamentary discussions.

Dr. Jagdeo expressed frustration, stating, “We’ve been trying to get their comments before so we can incorporate or assess whether their comments would add value to the draft before we table it in parliament.”

Furthermore, Dr. Jagdeo highlighted the Opposition’s failure to appoint a representative to sit on the Natural Resources Fund Public Accountability and Oversight Committee, a role mandated by the Natural Resources Fund Act. He emphasized the importance of this committee in ensuring transparency and accountability in managing natural resources.

He criticized the Opposition’s approach, suggesting they have chosen to stay on the sidelines and criticize from a distance, rather than actively participate in meaningful engagements and exercise true oversight.

Despite these concerns, Dr. Jagdeo assured the public that safeguards are in place to protect their interests. He reiterated that the Opposition still has the opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions during discussions in the National Assembly.

The lack of cooperation and active engagement from the Opposition has become a matter of contention in Guyana’s political landscape. Dr. Jagdeo’s comments shed light on the challenges faced in maintaining a constructive and collaborative approach in the country’s governance, urging the Opposition to play a more proactive role in fulfilling their responsibilities to the people.
