The Protected Areas Commission (PAC) is actively working on the development and improvement of several green spaces, including the National Park in Georgetown and Joe Vieira Park on the West Bank of Demerara.
Jason Fraser, the Commissioner of the Protected Areas Commission, has stated that significant plans are in place to enhance the National Park and make it more suitable for safe recreational activities.
The objective, he explained, is to upgrade the park, enabling people to engage in exercise, play, and socializing within a secure environment. The PAC’s focus is on creating better green spaces that facilitate recreational purposes while ensuring the well-being and enjoyment of individuals.
“There are quite a bit of upgrades happening there as well, soon you will see outdoor gyms, one beyond the arch and one by the kid’s play area, these are hydraulic gyms that you can just go and exercise, we’re also having a designated area for Dog Lovers, persons that want to walk their dogs and things like that will have an opportunity to do so in a safe space without having to compromise the safety of other park users,” the Commissioner said.
In addition, Joe Viera Park on the West Demerara is scheduled to undergo a major transformation.
“The investment in that project is US$11M and it’s scheduled to be completed by next month we should have that sod turning and from there it should take about 18 months to complete but that’s a major transformation,” he explained.
Earlier in the year, at the commissioning of a green space in New Amsterdam, President Dr. Irfaan Ali spoke about the importance of these facilities.
