The Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Robbie Rambarran has announced that there are massive upgrades planned for the hospital, including an increase in the number of surgical theatres.
Rambarran was at the time responding to questions from the media on the institution’s solution to the number of backlog surgeries. He further explained that the massive expansion will allow for more effective and efficient care and attention to patients.
“There is planning in the pipeline to increase our surgical theatre from four to six. So in our plan going forward, we will have about 10 to 12 operating room at this. This hospital is also geared for a massive upgrade as well with the expansion of the ICU from a seven bed to a 20 bed, so there will be massive expansion and plans and all of this would be geared towards patients having faster surgical time and intervention,” he explained.
Additionally, the new hospitals coming on stream, he said, will boast more operating theatres thus putting an ease on the main hospital.
However, he noted that while it is easier to build operating rooms, skilled personnel pose an issue. To this end, Northwell Health, a U.S Hospital, has committed to working with the GPHC to provide the technical training necessary to man the theatres.
“As the operating theater capability grows, the need for nurses who are technically skilled in operating rooms are going to be necessary and so this educational pipeline that they have taken careful consideration to create with us will help build the human resources as the physical infrastructure gets upgraded so that we can not only have ten to twelve operating room but will them with qualified and trained staff.”
Currently, there are only five operating theatres at the GPHC, and one must be always ready and available for emergency surgeries.
