The Brazilian Cultural Center in Guyana is offering a Portuguese Language Course and the opportunity to be selected for a University Scholarship in Brazil.
The Embassy says this is part of Brazil’s efforts to share its culture with Guyanese.
The Brazilian Cultural Center, which is now called ‘Instituto Guimarães Rosa’ (IGR), was inaugurated in 1962 and to this day continues to provide different opportunities for Guyanese to study the Portuguese Language.
Terezinha Marquez, the General Coordinator of the IGR, told this newscast that one of the key reasons for the Portuguese course being offered is to share one of the most important elements of Brazilian culture- their language.
“The main work we do here is teach Portuguese as a foreign language. We work by terms, so every term we open the registration and it’s $10,000 per term. Is not so expensive because our purpose is to share our language and culture and collaborate with the Guyanese public to improve their knowledge in terms of learning foreign languages,” she said.
Marquez also noted that the institute is a focal point for scholarships offered by the Brazilian Government, and this year, the PEC-G scholarship is available for individuals interested in studying in Brazil.
“The first step is learn Portuguese, The second step is to apply to the Celpe-Bras, which is a proficiency in Brazilian Portuguese and after that you are able to apply for PEC-G which is an exchange and scholarship program in Brazil. So you have to come to join us and learn Portuguese, apply for the Celpe exam, and then you can apply for the scholarship free of cost in Brazil.”
NCN understands that the PEC-G is an exchange scholarship available for students from countries with which Brazil has an agreement in the area of education, culture, or science and technology.
Guyanese who apply and are successfully selected will be able to study for a period of 4 years at a University in a Brazilian state of their choice.
Those interested in applying can access more information on the Instituto Guimarães Rosa’s social media platforms.
