$95 Million Children’s Play Park Commissioned in Georgetown

October 26, 2024

A new $95 million Children’s Play Park was officially opened on Friday, marking the sixth park commissioned under the Office of the First Lady’s National Beautification Project.

The park is part of an initiative to create more recreational spaces across Guyana, aiming to enhance community life in each administrative region.

Located in Georgetown’s National Park, the play park features modern amenities designed for families and children to unwind.

One of the park’s main attractions is a water pad, along with swings, slides, game boards, a hopscotch area, washroom facilities, benches, lights, free Wi-Fi, a security system, and concession shops.

At the ceremony, First Lady Arya Ali emphasized the importance of public parks in improving community life.

“Parks hold enormous value which we often take for granted. A robust ecosystem of public parks, coupled with frequent recreational programs, can significantly elevate the status of the community,” she stated.

The park has been well received by residents, with parents and guardians expressing excitement about the new space.

Tricia Nananan, a recent arrival from Canada, noted the park’s features reminded her of those back home.

“Seeing this here is impressive; it’s a bonus for us,” she said. Parent Ronell Lewis also praised the initiative, highlighting the park’s safety features and attractive colors. “I think it’s way better than before, especially the swings that cater for all ages.”

Cosmo Browne, another parent, emphasized the park’s potential for fostering community unity among children, allowing them to bond and create friendships.

Bibi Amin highlighted the social benefits for her child, as the park will provide opportunities for her to interact and develop confidence.

Robert Persaud, Chairman of the Protected Areas Commission, commended the First Lady for her leadership in upgrading the previous facility.

He noted that the park is part of a broader effort to improve urban spaces across Guyana.

“The enthusiasm from the children today shows how much they appreciate the work of our First Lady,” he said.

This new park is part of a larger project to transform public spaces for the betterment of communities throughout the country.
