The Committee of Supply has authorized the allocation of 9.6 billion dollars for Region Two, Pomeroon Supenaam, as part of the 41.9 billion dollars approved for the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development this year.
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag, provided details of the funding during the Committee of Supply session.
A significant portion of the budget—300 million dollars—will be dedicated to the repair, extension, and construction of educational facilities in Region Two.
This includes projects such as the construction of new schools at Mainstay Lake, a new nursery school at Bethany, and several other educational developments in the region.
Additionally, the funding will cover the construction of a duplex living quarter at Friendship Primary and kitchen extensions at several school dorms.
In the healthcare sector, 566 million dollars will be allocated to cover the costs of drugs and medical supplies for regional hospitals in Region Two.
In response to concerns from the opposition about potential wastage, Minister Parag outlined measures to ensure proper distribution and management of these supplies.
Road development in the region will also see investment, with 100 million dollars allocated for projects including the upgrading of Bagoman Street, Henrietta, and Caricom Street.
These investments are part of the government’s broader strategy to improve infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other essential services in Region Two.
