On July 17, 2024, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) commemorated the 60th anniversary of Michael Forde’s death with a wreath-laying ceremony and tributes at Le Repentir.

Michael Forde, a 22-year-old Progressive Youth Organization activist, was a key figure in the historic Freedom Marches of February 1964.

Forde lost his life on July 17, 1964, when he attempted to discard an explosive package left at Freedom House by someone pretending to purchase a book.

His heroic actions saved the lives of those present in the building.

During the ceremony, Seepaul Narine, President of GAWU, highlighted Forde’s ultimate sacrifice as a significant contribution to the growth of the PPP and Guyana’s ongoing transformation.

He emphasized that Forde’s legacy will continue to be honored annually as one of the party’s stalwarts.

Minister of Public Affairs, Kwame McCoy, also paid tribute, remembering Forde’s bravery and the lives he saved through his sacrifice.
