to provide medical services across Guyana

Some 58 medical personnel are in Guyana as part of the United States Antilles Medical Assistance Team (LAMAT) 2026 mission.

While here, the mission will work alongside local healthcare professionals for two weeks.

This marks LAMAT’s third mission to Guyana and the largest deployment so far.

The mission comprises 76 U.S. troops, 58 of whom are medical personnel from the military who will provide a range of services including surgical, ophthalmological, and dental care. Mission Commander, Colonel Theodore Liszeski, says his team will share experiences and help strengthen the local medical capacity.

“Over the next 2 weeks, our medical professionals will exchange knowledge, compare best practices and build interoperability that last beyond this engagement,”Col. Liszeski said.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony welcomed the team and underscored the importance of international collaboration. He says by working with institutions in the United States, Guyana can accelerate the development of its healthcare system.

In that context, that’s how we see LAMAT operating here because you bring a different set of skillsets that would be very appropriate to what we’re doing,” Dr Anthony explained.

Dr. Anthony says another group of medical professionals from Miami is expected to arrive next week to work alongside the LAMAT team and local healthcare workers.

LAMAT will be providing services at several health facilities including at the Linden Hospital Complex, Diamond, West Demerara and De Kinderen Regional Hospitals, Georgetown Public Hospital and the Cheddi Jagan Dental School.
