A total of 52 contracts, valued at $112.2 million, were signed on Friday at the Watooka Guest House for drainage and irrigation works in various communities across Region Ten.

The contracts, facilitated by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), are part of the government’s efforts to enhance infrastructure and address drainage challenges in the region.

Minister of Agriculture, Zulficar Mustapha, stated that over 500 people are expected to benefit directly from the projects.

These initiatives are aimed at improving local drainage and irrigation systems to prevent flooding and support agricultural development.

The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to boost agricultural production in the region, particularly the cultivation of corn and soya in the Berbice River area, which is expected to achieve self-sufficiency by the end of 2025.

In addition to the drainage and irrigation works, the government is constructing a conveyor system and a wharf at the Berbice River to facilitate the transportation of agricultural products to international markets.

Over the past four years, the Ministry of Agriculture has executed 44 major projects in the sector, totaling $1.5 billion.

These projects are part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the agricultural sector and support local farmers.

As part of the event, a mini excavator was handed over to NDIA Engineer Roderick Grant to assist with desilting efforts in the region.

The Minister urged the Community Development Councils (CDCs) to ensure that the funds allocated for the projects are used efficiently and that the works contribute to long-term solutions for the region’s drainage and irrigation needs.
