The 32nd Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA) Conference and Exhibition commenced at the Guyana Marriott, operating under the theme “Accelerating Change in the Water, Wastewater, and Solid Waste Sectors.”
Prime Minister Mark Phillips highlighted the impact of prolonged dry weather, which is expected to persist until the end of November.
He underlined concerns regarding arid conditions affecting agriculture, potentially jeopardizing the country’s food supply and farmers’ livelihoods.
Phillips emphasized the dwindling freshwater resources and expressed hope that the conference would address this challenge.
He pointed out the United Nations’ warning that climate change significantly threatens water supply and highlighted the decline of terrestrial water sources, which has far-reaching consequences for water security.
Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, stressed that the conference serves as a platform to exchange expertise, knowledge, and technology essential for enhancing the region’s resilience to climate change.
He noted that while the challenges are complex, they present opportunities for positive change, leading to a more sustainable and prosperous future.
The CWWA conference, scheduled from October 23 to 27, covers crucial topics including climate resilience, wastewater management, solid waste management, and financing.
It also features booths showcasing the latest innovations in water and waste supply management products and services.
This marks the second time Guyana has hosted the CWWA Conference.
