$31.7 Million Approved for MOE to Procure Furniture and Equipment for Schools

In a recent session, the Parliamentary Committee of Supply approved a total of $31.7 million for the Ministry of Education (MOE) to procure new furniture and equipment.

The funds will be allocated to benefit the Arthurville Primary School in Wakenaam and the Zeelugt Primary School in Region 3.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand highlighted that the Arthurville Primary School, with an overall cost of $84 million, was officially commissioned in November.

The addition of new modern laboratories necessitated the procurement of new furnishings.

Moreover, while the Zeelugt Primary School was constructed by the Local Government Ministry, the budget did not include provisions for furniture and equipment.

The newly acquired furniture and equipment are set to benefit approximately 600 students across both schools.

Minister Manickchand addressed inquiries regarding whether the need for new furniture is linked to the growing number of Venezuelan children in the school system, stating that the aim is to ensure quality education for all students.

As part of the government’s effort to sustain various work programs across sectors, a supplementary funding of $24 billion is being sought.
