3% Reduction in Recidivism Across Guyana’s Prisons

By Samuel Gillis

Prison Director Nicklon Elliot has announced a 3 percent reduction in recidivism rates across Guyana’s prisons, signaling a positive trend in the nation’s correctional system.

The reduction in recidivism was highlighted by Rae-Dawn Corbin-Cameron, the Head of the Guyana Prison Service’s Strategic Management Department, during her appearance on the program “Prison in Focus.”

Corbin-Cameron emphasized that only 18 percent of former inmates are returning to prison, reflecting the success of transformation efforts within the correctional facilities.

Corbin-Cameron outlined plans for structural and infrastructural transformation within the prison system, aiming to transition from a punitive approach to a rehabilitative one.

She mentioned the proposal of a new correctional bill to replace outdated legislation, with a focus on restoration and rehabilitation.

Additionally, Corbin-Cameron addressed the growing prison population and emphasized the need for collaboration with regional and local governments to develop initiatives aimed at dissuading inmates and ex-offenders from returning to a life of crime.

One such initiative mentioned was the Fresh Start Program.

The Guyana Prison Service is committed to implementing new strategies to address overcrowding issues and reduce the prison population, marking a significant period of change within the correctional system.

This reduction in recidivism reflects ongoing efforts to promote rehabilitation and reintegration, ultimately contributing to a safer and more productive society.
