The Ministry of Public Works has launched a $3 billion road rehabilitation project along the East Bank Demerara Corridor, spanning from Grove-Diamond to Good Success.
The project, which is expected to be completed within three months, covers 1.6 kilometers of road and involves six contractors—five handling road and drainage works, while the sixth is tasked with installing lighting fixtures.
On Sunday, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill met with residents at the Grove Primary School to discuss the scope of the works and address any concerns.
The project will involve upgrading the existing two-lane roadway, improving drainage systems, and addressing critical subsurface issues.
Minister Edghill explained that the road’s subsurface, which currently contains unstable materials like clay and peat, requires a complete overhaul.
The plan includes excavating the area, adding sand fill, and repaving the road to ensure durability.
To minimize disruption during construction, alternative access routes have been arranged.
Minister Edghill highlighted provisions for temporary internal roads and bridges, particularly for residents of Grove-Diamond, to access Buzz Bee Dam without using the main public road.
Additionally, the Special Projects Unit’s Head, Collin Gittens, assured the community that work would be carried out on a 24-hour basis to meet the three-month timeline.
Measures will also be taken to address residents’ concerns about water drainage onto their properties, with the Grove-Diamond Neighbourhood Democratic Council assisting with parking arrangements during the construction period.
The roadworks aim to enhance infrastructure in the region, contributing to the continued development of the East Bank Demerara area.
