The Ministry of Agriculture has announced a $25 million investment to construct a koker in Baracara, a community along the Canje River.

The initiative, revealed by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha during a community engagement on Sunday, aims to enhance water management and benefit local farmers in the area.

The koker, a water control structure, will regulate water levels in the canals, ensuring an adequate supply during dry seasons and preventing flooding during heavy rainfall.

The contract for the project has already been awarded, and construction is expected to commence soon.

In addition to the koker, the Ministry will extend the canals in the area to further support water management efforts.

Minister Mustapha emphasized that these developments would bolster agricultural activities in Baracara.

The Minister also announced plans to clear 350 acres of land for farming.

Residents will receive planting materials, including turmeric, ginger, and 30,000 plantain suckers, as part of the government’s efforts to promote agricultural productivity.

During the meeting, community members raised concerns about access to clean water, the need for licensed firearms, upgrades to the community ground, and the establishment of a hot meal kitchen.

Minister Mustapha assured residents that these issues would be addressed through the relevant agencies and ministries.

The project reflects the government’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure and supporting farmers, ensuring long-term benefits for the Baracara community.
