The Parliamentary Committee of Supply has approved $2 billion for the extensive renovation of the National Zoological Park, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to improve the park’s infrastructure.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Gail Teixeira, clarified during the budget estimates that the sum is part of a larger $2.8 billion allocation for the National Parks Commission.

Of the total amount, $2 billion will specifically go toward upgrading the zoological park.

The renovations will focus on modernizing the facility, creating a proper environment for housing and showcasing animals, and establishing a nature school for educating the public on climate resilience and wildlife protection.

Additionally, Minister Teixeira announced that $600 million would be allocated for a tree planting initiative in urban parks to improve carbon coverage, contributing to the country’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS).

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo had previously announced plans to transform the National Zoo into a more modern, family-friendly destination.

The upgrades are part of a broader effort to beautify Georgetown and promote green spaces within the capital.
