Works have commenced on a new access road, starting from the government reserve in line with Sussex Street to Mandela Avenue.

The project is being executed by the Ministry of Public Works.

The upgrade of Cemetery Road and Independence Boulevard has resulted in increased traffic flow along Sussex Street, prompting the widening of this stretch of road.

The project is divided into three lots: one from Saffon Street to St. Stephen Street, then St. Stephen to Cemetery Road, and finally from Cemetery Road to Mandela Avenue.

Project Engineer Kester Hinds outlined key aspects of the upgrade, which include the construction of five concrete bridges, concrete drains, a pedestrian walkway, and parking areas on both sides of the pavement.

Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill engaged residents on the project, emphasizing its importance in addressing long-standing infrastructure issues.

He noted that Sussex Street has been prone to failures and slips, and this development will improve connectivity and ease congestion in central Georgetown.

The project will allow commuters from Sussex Street to access Mandela Avenue, reducing travel time for those heading to the East Coast or Berbice without passing through the city’s congested areas.

The works from Saffon to St. Stephen Street are being executed by Eagles Eye Construction at a cost of GYD $497.5 million.

JS Engineering Service and Supplies is handling the St. Stephen to Cemetery Road segment for GYD $946.4 million, while Sherriff Construction is responsible for the new access road from Cemetery Road to Mandela Avenue, valued at GYD $837 million.
