17 Squatter Areas Regularized, Providing Housing Opportunities for Thousands

By Kimberly Giddings | January 5, 2025

The Ministry of Housing and Water has successfully regularized 17 squatter areas over the past three and a half years, providing over 1,500 house lots to citizens across the country.

This accomplishment was shared by Minister of Housing and Water, Hon. Collin Croal, during a year-end press conference held at the Arthur Chung Conference Center on Friday.

Minister Croal outlined the successful regularization efforts in 2024, which included areas such as Plantation Philadelphia and Plantation Dekentra in Region 10.

He also shared plans for additional regularization in 2025, targeting communities in Region 2 (Paradise and Walter Hall), Region 3 (Plantation Best and Best Reserve), and Region 4 (Success and Mocha Arcadia).

The Minister emphasized that the regularization program follows a specific criteria and made it clear that no new squatting will be regularized.

Minister Croal reiterated that the regularization process does not take into account factors such as a person’s political affiliation or appearance.

It is based on the government’s commitment to providing citizens with formal land ownership, ensuring those who have lived in squatter areas for years can gain access to secure housing.

This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to addressing the housing needs of Guyanese citizens and continues its efforts to improve living conditions across the country.
