The $138 million allocated to repair the Kwakwani pontoon has significantly improved the lives of residents and commuters in the area, according to Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill.

The rehabilitation of the pontoon, a crucial transportation link, was undertaken by the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) and its subcontractors.

During a recent session of the Parliamentary Committee of Supply, Minister Edghill defended the expenditure amid criticism from Opposition Member of Parliament David Patterson, who questioned the delay in addressing the pontoon’s deteriorating condition.

Minister Edghill explained that under the previous PPP/C administration (2011–2015), the system ensured that the Kwakwani Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) was responsible for maintaining the pontoon.

However, he noted that this arrangement was dismantled during the APNU/AFC government’s tenure, leading to the pontoon’s neglect.

The repairs, completed in early June, required approximately 100 hours of labor and the efforts of 39 staff members led by DHBC Manager Wayne Watson.

The restored pontoon now facilitates smoother operations for critical industries such as logging, mining, and agriculture, alongside improved transportation for residents.

Minister Edghill emphasized that the government’s intervention addressed a longstanding issue and restored a vital service to the satisfaction of the Kwakwani community.

He also pointed out the NDC’s inability to maintain the pontoon as a contributing factor to its initial decline.

The pontoon’s rehabilitation marks a renewed commitment to supporting hinterland infrastructure and ensuring reliable transportation for remote communities.
