$130M Water Well Underway at LBI New Housing Development

By Fabiana McKlmon | September 25, 2024

A $130 million water well is currently being drilled at La Bonne Intention (LBI) New Housing Development on the East Coast of Demerara, promising to enhance water access for over 2,000 households in the area.

The well is expected to be completed within three months, with efforts underway to potentially finish ahead of schedule.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, accompanied by a team from the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), conducted an inspection of the well site.

The project, initially awarded to Morris Jefferey for $85 million, encountered delays due to non-performance, leading to the termination of the contract.

It is now under the supervision of a new contractor, with oversight from the Central Housing and Planning Authority and GWI.

The well is designed to drill up to 900 feet and will produce approximately 300 cubic meters of water per hour, as noted by Marlon Daniels, GWI’s Director of Projects.

This new source of water will benefit both the northern and southern sections of the housing development, addressing current water challenges.

In the interim, residents on the northern side of the development are accessing water from an existing LBI well.

Minister Croal and Daniels have asked for patience from residents as the work continues, assuring them that the project is being prioritized to meet the growing needs of the community.

This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to promote home ownership and improve essential services in new housing schemes across the country.
