Climate change engagements between Guyana and Suriname are ongoing

Bilateral engagements between Guyana and Suriname on climate change are ongoing, with the visit of that country’s director of the climate compatible development agency, John Goedschalk.

The meeting with his Guyanese counterparts in the office for climate change is part of an enhanced bilateral assistance framework, agreed to by former president Bharrat Jagdeo and Suriname’s president, Desi Bouterse.

Suriname, like Guyana, is formulating policies to counter the impact of climate change and as such, the climate compatible development agency has been established to formulate a structured approach to this issue.

Suriname sees economic benefits from the development of its low carbon development strategy that will position it for benefits under the Redd Plus programs, designed to use financial incentives to reduce the emission of green house gases.

In this regard, Guyana and Suriname have been working closely in international climate change negotiations.
