Continuous monitoring of weather patterns and the opening up of the Maduni sluice on Tuesday has ensured a stable level of water in the East Demerara water conservancy.
This was the assurance given my agriculture minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy who, along with a team of officials, visited the Maduni sluice to ensure the proper functioning and release of water today.
“As you travel along the conservancy and you watch this dam you see that there is absolutely no evidence in addition to that sometimes people talk about the overtopping of the dam but as you travel you will see that there is no overtopping of the dam.”
The Minister noted that some 80% of water on land is expected to recede by tonight, with a decrease in rainfall. He however noted that much focus will be shifted to the Mahaica/ Mahaicony Abary area since there is still much water accumulation there, due to the river there continuing to rise
“We are hoping that with good weather that we would be able to close Maduni soon and if Maduni is closed and we keep moving water out into the Atlantic, then we should avert a major disaster for the area even though there is significant amount of losses already suffered b the farmers and we do know that it would take a while before the water level goes down and things get back to normalcy.”
The Agriculture Minister stated that despite some damages and losses, the situation in Guyana could have been worse, had it not been continuous monitoring and works by the ministry.
