800 applications processed for East Bank housing development

Approximately 800 applications for land use permission for business and building purposes on the East Bank of Demerara have been processed by the Housing and Water Ministry. According to Minister, Irfaan Ali, this indicates the progressive development of the housing schemes.

Among the areas for which applications were processed was the new Eccles Housing Scheme, where approval was granted for the construction of more than five light industrial Commericial complexes, this is expected to provide employment for about three hundred persons.

“Now let us take the new Eccles for example where we have a thousand new houselot and that’s a part of the East Bank development we have a light industrial complex that would be located in close proximity and a commercial zone so that we can generate business include the private sector and at the same time create employment for the new residents of this scheme, one of the socially and economically viable” Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali said.

The Government in 2011 surpassed its house lot distribution target of 6,500, with thousands given out on the East Bank of Demerara.

Meanwhile, Minister Ali said his Ministry is now focusing on expanding its Geographic Information System (GIS), which would serve as an effective management tool for the Central Housing and Planning Authority.

The technology focuses on capturing and mapping spatial data in areas under the community planning projects. The exercise involves areas in Regions 3, 4, 5, 9 and 10. (Photo: GINA - A section of the Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara)
