The Caribbean Region will now benefit from more sophistic health services from the new Caribbean Public Health Agency. This according to former Assistant Secretary General of Caricom and advisor to CARPHA Edward Greene who said the new agency is a merger of five major regional health institutions.
“The reason for that, is to rationalize resources and ensure greater effect on the response to regional health emergencies and to promote and develop information education and communication tools related to surveillance of the disease and to research and development as well as to educate public and the various stakeholders on public health approaches”
The merger includes the Caribbean Epediamological Centre, the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute and the Caribbean Health Research Council the Caribbean Drug Training and Labortary and the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute.
CHARPA will be located in Trinidad and according to green and there will be a high level of expertise providing citizens of the region with exceptional health care.
“By having such an entity what you do is you provide a top level expertise in the region in one place that can communicate internationally as well as with the national governments so what you’re really doing is having a centre of excellence in CHARPA that no single country will be able to provide”
Jerome walcott former minister of health in Barbados is the interim director of the agency which is a Caricom Initiate.
