All set for opening of 10th Parliament

Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman today outlined to NCN a breakdown of the preparations and expectations for the tenth parliament.

Tenth parliament will be officially opened on Friday February tenth and Speaker of the House, Raphael Trotman said preparations are ongoing for this as there is an air of excitement expectancy enthusiasm and optimism for this session. On Friday there will be a military parade, a presidential parade and the presidential salute. Following this, President Donald Ramotar will officially addressed the house, as well as the Speaker of the National Assembly will deliver and address.

 

Mr. Trotman shares his expectations on the president’s speech.

“Hopefully he will set out a vision as I said he have budget coming soon and I believe the budget will match that vision, projections that are ongoing ,social issues and how we are going to be addressing that, poverty there is a lot of flooding there is a lot of natural phenomenon  taking place there’s the issue of crime and security piracy and so fourth.”

This parliament very historical as it is the first time the joint opposition has the majority of seats in the house. The new speaker is also optimistic that this has its benefits.

“So, this is an opportunity to demonstrate to the people that their confidence in us is not misplaced and that we can move above, against our petit partisan political lives and do what is right in the interest of the nation, find accommodation there’s going to be times when we may not see eye to eye on everything but if we keep the nation of Guyana ahead of us I think it will be okay.”

The parliament chambers were also refurbished and the portraits of the late former presidents Hugh Desmond Hoyte and Mrs Janet Jagan was placed on the wall alongside the other former presidents. Trotman revealed that a portrait of former president Bharrat Jagdeo is also expected to grace the walls of parliament chambers soon
