David Granger elected as Leader of the Opposition

Presidential candidate of The Peoples National Congress Reform –led A Partnership for National Unity, David Granger, has been elected leader of the Opposition. His election took place on Monday in Parliament chambers among the non-governmental members of the National Assembly.
In accordance with article 184 of the Constitution of Guyana, the non-governmental members of the National Assembly were summoned to a meeting at parliament chambers today under the chairmanship of the Speaker.

Presidential candidate of the PNCR-led APNU, David Granger was duly elected as leader of the opposition following his colleague member of Parlaiment Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, which was seconded by Aubrey Norton. However, there were no further nominations which paved the way Granger to hold the position since the 31 members who were present all voted in favour of him. Reportedly of part of an agreement that saw Rapheal Trotman emerge as speaker at last Thursday’s sitting, the first of the tenth parliament.
Granger in his remarks pledged to use his office to bring about changes for Guyanese.

It’s a historic occasion, and we shall go on in the years to come to make this tenth parliament memorable in the political history of this country.”Meanwhile, Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman said he is confident that granger will function to the best of his ability in that capacity.

“We on this side of the opposition if I may say so would like to state that first we will have running engagements and disagreements on certain issues, but rest assured  Mr. Granger that indeed the AFC is going to ensure that our working engagements with each other is for the benefit of the people of this nation.”

Meanwhile, leader of the AFC, Khemraj Ramjattan in his congratulatory remarks, pledged to work along with Granger.
