Tenth Parliament convenes

The joint opposition on Thursday played out the very actions that the PPP/C Government and former President Bharrat Jagdeo had warned against by joining forces to win the speakership of the Tenth Parliament; shutting out the ruling Party  which secured the majority of the seats.

Subsequent to the reading of the Proclamation of the summoning session, the three Parliamentary political Parties put forward their nominations for the Speaker. The ruling Party indicated their support for the former Speaker, Ralph Ramkarran, Alliance for Change (AFC), Raphael Trotman and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) nominated Deborah Backer.

After the Opposition expressed their refusal to support the nominee put forward by the Government a vote by division was conducted which resulted in 32 members for and 33 against the nomination of Ramkarran. The APNU then withdrew its nomination of Backer, a move which paved the way for Trotman to be elected and sworn-in as the new Speaker of the House. However, Backer was again nominated by her Party, this time as the Deputy Speaker, a post in which she was elected since no nominations were put forward.

Subsequent to the swearing in of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, Members of Parliament (MPs), both old and new, took their Oath of Office; thus constituting the Tenth Parliament of Guyana. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds in his brief remarks said that in terms of practical considerations with regards to expediting the business of the people of Guyana, Government still holds to its view that the convention by which the Speaker nominated by the minority government, should have been acceded to.

Nevertheless, he expressed the hope that the Speaker would stay true to the oath which he took to be fair and even-handed.
